This is my “Why” by Frank Moreno Fages

This is my “Why” by Frank Moreno Fages

One day our superintendent suggested that every teacher and educator in our district ask themselves the question: “Why do I teach?”. I remember at that time I already had a clear answer. Once I got into the study of how to make my classes more culturally responsive, everything began to magically fall into place.

When an Educator, Motivator or Teacher:

Changes mindsets to create a new world

Unpacks personal biases to become more supportive

Loses his/her mind searching for an accommodation for all students in need

Tries to understand every single culture present in the classroom

Uses every single resource available to help all students

Restructures his/her methods for giving students more clarity

Adds love and passion to every lesson

Likes equity as a priority in the classroom

Links families and communities with the school

Yields the way for student voices to be heard

Runs by their side supporting every step

Encourages students’ will to believe in themselves

Strives to see all their dreams accomplished

Potentiates their goals

Overcomes all obstacles

Negates failure at all times

Solves their personal problems

Invests free time studying their backgrounds

Visits students’ houses for creating relationships

Educates a human being with strong will and able to touch the sky.

Then that Educator, Motivator or Teacher can say: “Inclusiveness is my priority”, “Love is my everyday tool” and my “Why” is so clear. He is able to see them as his/her own children regardless of race, social class, sexual orientation, religion, gender, language, nationality and ability.

See you in class!
